"We tried influencers and it didn't work" might be the most common sentence in Irish e-commerce marketing. Usually, what didn't work wasn't the idea — it was putting all their eggs in one basket, for example committing a large budget on a single piece of organic influence content that didn't take off, or expecting reach to come with a UGC collaboration.
They're different deliverables with different pricing logic. Here's the honest comparison, with real Irish numbers — a taster from our free Irish UGC Playbook for Brands.
The core distinction
- A UGC creator sells production skill: a skilled creative who handles concept, filming, performance and often editing in one. The content is made for the brand to use — often it never appears on the creator's own account. Follower count is largely irrelevant.
- An influencer sells reach and trust with an audience they've built. You're renting attention.
Influencer marketing is renting someone's audience; UGC is producing native, relatable creative designed for paid social on Meta and TikTok.
The costs, side by side (Irish market)
What you're buying — UGC: content, ad-ready creative. Influencer: audience, reach and borrowed trust.
Typical Irish cost — UGC: €50–€175 per video (typical €100–€175). Influencer: €150–€2,000+ per post, scaling with reach.
Follower count — UGC: largely irrelevant. Influencer: the basis of the price.
Usage rights — UGC: frequently included, confirm in writing. Influencer: an add-on; expect +20–50% for paid usage.
Creative control — UGC: high — briefed, scripted, revisable. Influencer: limited — their voice, their audience.
Measured by — UGC: CPA / ROAS in Ads Manager. Influencer: reach, engagement, promo codes — attribution is fuzzier.
Scales by — UGC: volume — more creators, more concepts, more tests. Influencer: bigger names, bigger fees.

When each one wins
UGC wins when your goal is profitable customer acquisition through paid social. Creative volume drives performance testing, and UGC gives you 12–15 ad variations from a €900–€1,600 creator budget. It's judged on one thing: does it convert.

Influencers win when you need an awareness moment — a launch, a retail listing, a credibility transfer into a community you can't reach. In a market as small as Ireland, a well-matched influencer with genuine local trust can move real product.
The hybrid is often the smartest spend: negotiate paid usage rights into an influencer deal, then run the content as a partnership ad or Spark Ad from their handle. An influencer post that dies in Stories after 24 hours is poor value; the same content running as a partnership ad for 90 days is a different proposition entirely.
One rule that applies to both
Disclosure. Any content a creator or influencer posts to their own channels under a commercial relationship — paid or gifted — must be clearly disclosed under guidance from Ireland's Advertising Standards Authority and the CCPC. #ad, upfront, plus platform labels. Responsibility is shared with the brand, so it belongs in your agreement.
